This program, presented by Brad Nelson, will introduce basic information about
butterflies and some of the species common in our area with a focus on the Monarch butterfly.
Brad will discuss the Monarch’s life cycle, different types of milkweeds common in our area,
and which milkweeds are more likely to attract Monarchs. He will also provide gardening
techniques that will help attract Monarchs, describing specific types of plants that are best for
enticing them and which are better to help perpetuate the species. The presentation will also
include an explanation of migration routes and when to expect Monarchs in this area. Brad has
been involved with Monarch Watch, the University of Kansas tagging program, for the last 5
years. He raises Monarchs through September, culminating in a release of about 150 tagged
butterflies that will journey to Mexico. The Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made
possible thanks to Conserving Carolina’s partnership with the Spartanburg County Public
Libraries.
