October 3, 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of Black Mountain’s Monarch Waystations! Patchwork Meadows will celebrate by hosting migration viewings at the South Veterans Park Monarch Waystation each Friday morning, September 19 - October 3.
Ten years ago on Oct 3, 2015, Patchwork Meadows owner, Emily Sampson, saw her first monarch migration event at Veterans Park. That experience inspired her to create the Waystation there. It has paid off! In 2023, over 1000 monarchs visited the meadow during late September!
PLAN B
Migrations are weather dependent. If there aren't many monarchs at the South Veterans Park Waystation, we will caravan from South Veterans Park to other known gathering locations in the vicinity. Emily will be following Journey North to know when and where to expect them.
For folks interested in joining to travel up to sites on the Blue Ridge Parkway to observe peak migration, you can expect to travel up the parkway at least as far at MP415 at Cherry Cove Overlook and to be back down to Asheville/Black Mountain area in early afternoon, You should pack a snack. You are welcome to meet to observe them at Veterans Park that morning even if you aren't able to caravan up the Parkway.
If you are interested in joining and would like to keep up with details via email rather than Facebook, please send Emily your email address and/or phone number emily@patchworkmeadows.com.
